One year into his second tour of duty with St. Louis, the veteran quarterback was released Wednesday in a move that saves $1.3 million in salary cap space.
The club also released wide receiver Drew Bennett as it continues to position itself for the start of the free agency and trading period Friday.
Green's departure means the Rams will have a new backup quarterback this year. One possibility is Tampa Bay free agent Jeff Garcia, who played for Shurmur in Philadelphia in 2006. It's common for head coaches or offensive coordinators to have backups whom they have worked with in the past.
Meanwhile, Bennett's release is a wash — it saves the team only $50,000 in cap space. He signed a six-year, $30 million contract before the 2007 season as a free agent from the Tennessee Titans. But Bennett never came close to playing up to that contract in St. Louis, in part because of injuries.
As the Rams' No. 3 wide receiver in 2007, he caught 33 passes for 375 yards and three touchdowns. Last season, he never got started, suffering a season-ending foot injury after catching a 4-yard pass on the Rams' first offensive series of the opener in Philadelphia.
